ARTHUR JACOB (1790–1874)
Five generations of the Jacob family were medical practitioners in our county.
Arthur was Professor of
Anatomy and Physiology in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and twice elected its
president. He
was a renowned anatomist and also published important opthalmic treatises, but the pinnacle of his
illustrious medical
career was his discovery of a previously unknown membrane in the eye.
Since known
as membrana Jacobi, it forms part of the retina.
The inscription reads Arthur Jacob. MD. F.R.C.S. Prof. of Anat. & Phys. Roy. Coll. of Surg. in Ireland
In commemoration of eminent services rendered to Science and the Medical Profession in Ireland. 1860.
